Benson community celebrates 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe

The RAF Benson community and Benson residents came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe with a Drumhead service and a street party. The event, hosted by Benson Parish Council, took place on the Faye Elizabeth Recreation Ground.

The celebration began with a Drumhead service, where RAF Benson personnel, members of the Royal British Legion, local schools, community groups, and residents gathered in a hollow square around a field altar. The service was led by RAF Benson Padre, Squadron Leader McCormick and overseen by Station Commander Tierney and the Station Commander's Cadet. Pupils from RAF Benson Primary School delivered the first reading.

A highlight of the service was a flypast from 28 Squadron RAF Benson, adding a local touch to the event.

Following the service, the community enjoyed a street party celebration. A swing band provided ambient music, creating an enjoyable atmosphere for all age groups. The event was a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate, and remember the significance of Victory in Europe.
