As part of Armed Forces Week, RAF Benson proudly celebrates the extraordinary contributions of military medical professionals embedded within the John Radcliffe Hospital.
These dedicated individuals maintain the readiness to deploy at a moment’s notice whilst supporting the NHS, working across vital departments including the Emergency Department, Emergency Assessment Unit, Intensive Therapy Unit, surgical wards, operating theatres, and radiology. Their presence enhances the hospital’s capacity while ensuring that military medical capabilities remain sharp and responsive.

Wednesdays are set aside as “military days” for the team—a time for collective training, development, and reflection. This week, the team welcomed a particularly special guest: Allen Parton, Royal Navy Veteran and founder of the charity Hounds for Heroes. Allen was medically discharged following a traumatic injury sustained during military service. Allen shared his deeply personal journey, recounting how a chance encounter with Endal, an assistance dog transformed his life.
Allen Parton said: To have spent the day in the company of such an inspirational group of serving personnel starkly reminds me of a career sadly lost to me in the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf war so many moons ago.

Allen founded Hounds for Heroes so that injured personnel from the military and emergency services have the opportunity to partnership with the right dog to enable their lives.
Allen commented: I have been left in no doubt that the services are standing shoulder to shoulder with us and we are not forgotten... from where I sit in the wheelchair it's a very powerful and much needed message to hear.
As we mark Armed Forces Week, RAF Benson extends heartfelt thanks to the medical professionals who serve both in uniform and in scrubs, and to the veterans who share their stories to inspire and advocate for others. Their dedication, compassion, and strength are an essential part of the Armed Forces Community.
