Safety Day

Safety Day was held at RAF Boulmer, organised by the Station’s Safety, Health and Environmental Protection (SHEP) team. Addressing a broad spectrum of safety concerns, the day was full of educational sessions and informational materials to promote safety awareness.

One of the highlights of the day was a captivating brief, held by Derek Longstaff, from Northumbria Police, to provide awareness about Drink Driving. As young drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents, this brief was crucial to address dangerous driving behaviour, for not only the safety of our personnel, but the safety of the public and to deter drivers from engaging in risky behaviour.

Sections from across the Station also contributed to the day. An Adventurous Training/Force Development stand, hosted by Physical Education Flight, Corporal Carroll and Corporal Hamilton, informed onlookers on the importance of personal protection equipment. Corporal Carroll and Corporal Hamilton provided demonstrations on how to use this equipment while Corporal Roskell and AS1 Smart from the Distributed Cyber Protection Team raised awareness of cyber hygiene through a workshop and a game. Sergeant Harrigan, from RAF Police, handed out literature from her drink and drug safety stand to offer education on risks of drink spiking.

The Station Environmental Protection Advisor gave a brief about the ‘residents’ of RAF Boulmer that have nested here, one of them being the Oystercatcher which is an amber bird of concern. The brief outlined our legal responsibilities in terms of stewardship and environmental ethics. Highlighting the importance of protecting these nesting sites is key to ensuring the survival of bird species.

Through the numerous briefs and informational stands held throughout the day, RAF Boulmer significantly enhanced the Station’s awareness and preparedness to maintain a safe work and home life environment. Well done to the sections involved!
