SSAFA and RAF Boulmer marks D-Day anniversary with unique beach art

A large-scale sand piece of sand art on Boulmer Beach marked the anniversary of D-Day, combining the crests of RAF Boulmer and the Soldiers', Sailors' & Airmen's Families Association (SSAFA) in a powerful commemorative tribute.

The artwork brought together serving personnel, veterans, military families, volunteers and supporters ahead of Saturday's anniversary, creating a unique focal point for reflection on the service and sacrifice of those who came before.

The mural, designed by Soul2Sand, merged the SSAFA logo with the badge of RAF Boulmer, honouring the deep partnership between SSAFA Northumberland and the station, a relationship that continues to provide vital welfare support to serving personnel and veterans today.

"As we approach the anniversary of D-Day, I have reflected on the vital role played by the predecessors of RAF Boulmer and today's Air Command and Control Force. It is a privilege to continue that legacy, and events like this give us the opportunity to honour their courage while recognising the invaluable support SSAFA continues to provide serving personnel and veterans."

As the tide gradually washed the artwork away, and to the sounds of the Allstar Choirs and Boulmer Military Wives Choir, it offered a poignant final reflection, that while monuments and memorials may fade, the service and sacrifice they represent should never be forgotten.

"The temporary nature of the sand art is particularly powerful to me, a reminder that while moments pass, remembrance must continue if we are to preserve the legacy of those who served."
