Due to the temporary closure of the runway at RAF Brize Norton for maintenance work (Operation Mace Vector), 30 Reservists from No. 4624 (County of Oxford) Movements Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, played a vital role in supporting the relocation of Air Mobility Air Wing squadrons and 1 Air Mobility Wing Movements operations from RAF Brize Norton to MOD Boscombe Down.
During this period, the Reservists contributed significantly to the Air Mobility Air Wing out-load and the transition phase of the Air Movements Squadron. Twelve personnel assisted the Station Mobility Support Flight in deploying 1.2 million kilograms of squadron equipment by road, loading 339,500 kilograms of freight onto 62 forty-foot trucks—accounting for one-third of the total out-load—within just 10 days.
Meanwhile, ten personnel were instrumental in relocating Air Movements Squadron Import operations back to their hangar following completion of building work, ensuring that essential business-as-usual operations continued seamlessly throughout the high-tempo transition. In total, 98 aircraft pallets of equipment were moved, and 26 forty-foot vehicles were loaded and dispatched.
The additional workforce provided crucial resilience during this critical deployment phase. Thanks to early collaborative planning with 1 Air Mobility Wing Movements and the Mobility Support Flight, all tasks were completed on schedule. Feedback highlighted that 4624 Movements Squadron’s support was invaluable and a decisive factor in achieving the out-load and transition on time.
