As part of this year’s Road Safety Week, 501 Logistics Squadron delivered a powerful and timely Station brief led by five members of the Squadron’s reservist cadre: Air Specialists Thompson, Gladstone, Ali, Fletcher, and Corporal Boswell.

Drawing directly on their real-life civilian employment, including roles as a Heli Med doctor, traffic police officer, accident investigation officer and firefighter, the team brought to life the stark, everyday realities of avoidable road traffic incidents. Their stories provided a compelling reminder of the ripple-effect consequences road accidents have on victims, families, emergency responders and the wider community, particularly as we approach the busy Christmas period.

Though part-time volunteer reservists within 501 Squadron, the team are true professionals and heroes in their day jobs. Their willingness to share their specialist knowledge, personal experiences and operational insight was extremely well received by members of the Station. Attendees engaged fully throughout, and the session left everyone with a deeper appreciation of both road safety and the exceptional skill sets held within our own Squadron.

We extend our sincere thanks to Air Specialists Thompson, Gladstone, Ali, Fletcher and Corporal Boswell for taking the time to deliver this invaluable brief, for the professionalism they bring to 501 Squadron and for their continued service to both the RAF Reserves and their respective civilian communities.
Deputy Squadron Commander, 501 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Courtenay Smith, said:
“I was both proud and hugely informed by what our junior cadre of reservists undertake in their civilian roles and even prouder to see them bring that expertise to life for the station during Road Safety Week. Their contribution has set a strong foundation for future campaigns and we look forward to building on this year’s success. As a logistics squadron with a significant Motor Transport footprint, road safety remains of the utmost importance to us every single day and we will continue to stay fully integrated with the Station to enhance their RAF and Defence level road safety efforts and subsequent submissions in the not too distant future.”
