It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Chief Technician Robert James Thatcher ‘Thatch’, who sadly passed away on 12 August 2026, following a short battle with cancer.
Rob served the Royal Air Force with distinction for 24 years, dedicating his career to supporting air operations and mentoring those around him. His service included seven years with XV(Reserve) Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, six years with the Red Arrows, and eight years as a Ground Engineer with No. LXX Squadron (Atlas (A400M)). Throughout his career, he earned the respect of colleagues across the RAF for his professionalism, expertise, and unwavering commitment to duty.
Away from work, Rob was a keen skier and runner, embracing challenges with the same enthusiasm and determination that characterised his service life. He was a valued friend and colleague whose warmth, humour and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Rob leaves behind his wife, Frances, and his children Charlie, Alasdair and George.
