The Gate Guardian has stood watch over 47 Air Despatch at RAF Brize Norton since being moved from its original base RAF Lyneham on 28th January 2013.

The memorial plaque, which reads, 'The Air Despatch Dakota was inaugurated by Major General MS White CB CBE DL on 21st June 2002 in honour of those Air Despatchers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Captain Joshua Lakey said:

“The restoration reflects our ongoing commitment to honouring the legacy of those who came before us. The freshly painted Guardian is not only a visual powerful landmark but also a tribute to the generations who have served with distinction.”

The project was led by Warrant Officer 2 Prior and Sergeant Lewis, both currently serving Air Despatchers and co led by a team of volunteers under direction of Brian Hall and Ron McCaffrey. The restoration spanned approximately eight months with members of 47 AD giving their spare time when busy, whilst ensuring they continued their busy roles within the Squadron. The majority of the work, however, was carried out over weekends by a dedicated team of civilians and veterans of 47 AD. With their combined efforts the project was completed in time for the departure of the Squadron's Officer Commanding.

We, as a Squadron, are extremely grateful to all those involved, bringing back to life this iconic piece of military history.
