Eda Hughes, ex-WRAF chef, marked her 100th birthday in the same year as the Royal Air Force celebrates its 100th anniversary. Eda’s Great Grandson Dane Baracskay, who is currently serving at RAF Brize Norton, attended Eda’s 100th Birthday party in his full uniform.
Joining Eda for her special day and birthday party were her siblings, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, plus the many friends she has made while living at her care home, in the North West of England.
Eda, who was born and brought in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, was called up at the beginning of World War II and joined the WRAF in 1940 as a chef, serving the pilots before they headed out for their mission that day.
“I was only allowed to serve the pilots eggs as apart of their breakfast and everyone else was not allowed them!”

Whilst serving in the WRAF, Eda had met her husband Phillip Hughes who was also a chef, and shared their love of dancing, especially ballroom, and often travelled to Blackpool, where they danced in the famous Tower Ballroom.
Dane, Eda's Great Grandson, attended the party to honour Eda's life, and WRAF career. He has served 5 years as a Logistic Supplier and is currently with No. 99 Squadron.
“I could not be more proud to serve in this uniform knowing that my great grandma and granddad also served many years ago.”
