RAF Brize Nortons Air Freight Export Facility, Hangar 49 Has Been Reopened

Today (Friday 12 June), RAF Brize Norton Station Commander, Group Captain Dan James has officially reopened Hangar 49 after the completion of extensive renovations.

During an opening address from the Station Commander, Group Captain James said:

“Today’s reopening of Hangar 49 hopefully marks the beginning for a brighter future for air movements at RAF Brize Norton, with Defence Support and Programme Future Airport working hard to bring together automation, digitisation and innovative ways of working to the cargo handling facility.”

First opened in 1939, Hangar 49 is one of the original buildings built on the RAF Brize Norton site. Despite its age, the hangar remains a cornerstone of Defence capability, supporting the deployment of freight across the world in support of Defence Engagement, exercises and operations.

Home to Number 1 Air Mobility Wing’s Air Movements Squadron, the refurbishment of Hangar 49 will provide a better and safer place of work for RAF Movements personnel, ensuring the continued capability for effective and reliable cargo despatch around the globe.

The successful completion of the project has been based on a Whole Force approach, of Support Services Squadron, Amey, Defence Infrastructure Organisation over a twenty six month period. During the renovations, 1 AMW personnel have remained highly flexible throughout, continuing to deliver Defence’s output requirement, from a variety of temporary infrastructure solutions.

In a message from Head of Logistics Branch and Trades, Air Vice-Marshal Richard Hill said:

“I was delighted to hear that Royal Air Force Brize Norton’s Hangar 49 has re-opened, I should like to take this opportunity to thank those officers, warrant officers, non-commissioned officers, airmen and airwomen each of whom have played their part and worked so hard to maintain the Air Port of Embarkation’s ability to despatch freight throughout the disruption caused by the building work on Hangar 49.”
