RAF100 RACE DAY AT CARTERTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE

In March, the RAF100 challenge was set by RAF Brize Norton’s Station Commander, Group Captain Tim Jones, to plan, design and build a rocket car. Over the Spring and Summer terms the students set about creating their designs with the guidance of the STEM ambassadors and teachers.

On Tuesday 17th July it is planned for the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team to jump into the school’s sports day with the list of winners. The winners will then be announced and will awarded with a tour of RAF Brize Norton.

“I found it interesting because I had not done anything like it before. Making a Bloodhound rocket car made me think about how the objects are put together.  My role was the designer and the project was very fun and interesting.”

"RAF100 Bloodhound Rockets Cars challenge at Carterton Community College has been a fantastic opportunity for over 300 of our students to participate in an engaging STEM project.  I am immensely proud of our students and the enthusiasm and creativity they showed during the challenge. Launch day has been a huge success with 100 cars speeding down our track. I'm looking forward to awarding the winners next week!! Huge thanks to RAF Brize Norton STEM ambassadors for all their support!!"

“Today is a culmination of months of work. It’s three stage competition 1. Procurement 2. Design 3. Build, leading to launch day, the students will be judged on how well they performed in each stage of the process. It’s not just about the speed of the car that defines the comp winner it’s also about teamwork, leadership, creativity. The cars we have seen today have shown a lot of creativity. Some of the students have obviously thought a lot about the aerodynamics and the mass which has a huge impact on the speed of the car. The students have taken the challenge seriously and have had a great time.”
