During the period 01-12 December 2025, personnel from Tactical Air Traffic Control (TacATC) undertook a demanding charity fitness challenge, to raise funds and awareness for 'Brain Tumour Research'.
The challenge was inspired by the personal loss experienced by Flight Lieutenant Simmons, whose sister Laura sadly passed away earlier this year, following a battle with Glioblastoma. The team committed to the challenge as a demonstration of unity, compassion and collective resilience, while supporting a cause that has touched many families within the unit. Participants ran 12 kilometres every day for 12 consecutive days, covering a total of 144 kilometres per person.

The challenge involved TacATC controllers and headquarters staff, with additional runners joining in unity, including a former TacATC member now posted abroad, and colleagues from the US military CAOS team. In reflection of the unit’s operational footprint, runs took place across the UK and Europe, with personnel based at RAF Brize Norton, Pembrey, the Netherlands, and other overseas locations.
The 12 days of events culminated in a special finale run at RAF Brize Norton on Friday 12 December, featuring a symbolic finish through a water arch on the Station runway.

Despite setting an initial fundraising target of £500, the team had already raised over £3,200 before the start, with aspirations to reach £5,000 by the end of the challenge.
A TacATC spokesperson said:
“This challenge has really epitomised the strength of our team and the family culture within TacATC. It’s been a demanding year operationally, but the way our people have come together in difficult weather, on awkward shifts, and across different countries, has been exceptional. We’re incredibly proud of everyone involved and grateful for the generosity shown by those who have supported us.”

The team hopes that sharing their story will not only boost fundraising efforts, but also raise awareness of the vital work carried out by Brain Tumour Research, while highlighting the positive impact of teamwork, resilience and compassion within the Armed Forces.
