TACTICAL MEDICAL WINGS (TMW) CRITICAL AIR SUPPORT TEAM (CCAST) SUCCESSFULLY EVACUATES CASUALTY WITH RAF BRIZE NORTONS A400M AIRCRAFT

Another successful mission was completed by TMW’s CCAST utilising RAF Brize Norton’s versatile A400M aircraft at the weekend. A critically ill patient was returned to the UK for further treatment at Royal Centre of Defence Medicine (RCDM) Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Not only was it clinically very successful, it gave both the CCAST and aircrew the opportunity to work closely together and learn from each other’s tactics, techniques and procedures in real time. Understanding the roles and responsibilities of how we all work is essential to ensure missions are completed without risk to the patient or aircraft.

The A400M achieved initial operating capability for CCAST in Jul 18 and since then 2 real life missions have been completed as well as regular familiarisation and training opportunities for the medical teams and Air Loadmasters within the Cargo Hold Trainer.

The A400M is the aircraft of choice in many situations due to its adaptability and reach. Not only can it be used for general aeromedical evacuation (AE) patients, critical care patients, but also highly infectious patients that may require evacuation utilising the Air Transportable Isolator (ATI). The extensive interior means that freight can also be loaded as well as patients making use of the flexible inside space. Sometimes a change in cabin altitude is requested dependant of the patient’s condition or surgery performed. Increased pressure causes gas expansion and a lower cabin altitude is essential for patient safety, the A400M is fully capable of meeting all AE needs.
