'Mi Amigo' Flypast - Sheffield

On Friday 22 February RAF Coningsby joined with our US allies to commemorate the 75th anniversary of ten American B17 crewmen losing their lives when their aircraft crashed in Sheffield.

Two Typhoons from 41(TES) Squadron along with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota were part of a ten aircraft flypast that honored the crew and recognised the tireless endeavor of local resident Mr Tony Foulds. Mr Foulds has maintained a memorial in the park to the crash in 1944 for many years.

Approximately 10,000 people were in the park for the event that was also watched by just over three million people on BBC Breakfast.

The Dakota pilot, Flight Lieutenant Neil Farrell said,

“It was an honour to take part in the flypast today to remember the sacrifice the B17’s crew made and to be able to show Tony the gratitude he deserves for his dedication to their memory.”
