The Drone Code – Flying a Drone Near to an Airfield

The law is changing.  From 13 March 2019, it will be illegal to fly a drone inside an airport or airfield’s flight restriction zone without permission.  If your drone endangers the safety of an aircraft, it is a criminal offence and you could go to prison for 5 years.

At RAF Cosford, the flight restriction zone extends 2.0nm (or 3.7km) in a circle from the centre of the runway and up to 2000ft (or 609m) above the ground.  Additionally, aircraft are further protected on the approach and climbout lanes, which extend 2.7nm (5km) from the end of each runway and are 0.5nm (1km) wide.

If you fall within this area and want to fly your drone safely, you must seek prior permission from the airfield operators.  At Cosford, you must contact either:

·         Air Traffic Control on 01902 377582

·         Airfield Manager on 01902 377778

·         Be prepared to share your location, the time when you would like to fly and the maximum height of your drone.

Remember, you cannot fly your drone unless you have prior permission.
