On the 21st of October, Halton House Officer’s Mess became HMS Halton, as RAF Halton commemorated the Battle of Trafalgar. Usually the Mess would celebrate with a traditional Trafalgar Night Dinner, however due to the COVID restrictions the Mess Committee had to get creative!

Military Historian Frank Ledwidge and Lt Scott Lewis RN gave a colourful and interactive demonstration of the Battle of Trafalgar, with personnel spread across the quarter deck (the floor of the Salon) and the rigging (the balcony). Whilst the socially distanced event didn’t quite match the noise, rolling broadsides and smoke from 215 years ago, Mr Ledwidge and Lt Lewis RM were able to show how Admiral Nelson’s understanding of maritime warfare, his tactics and leadership during the battle allowed him to led his crew of Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel to one of the greatest naval victories in history, despite being significantly outnumbered.
215 years ago, outnumbered, an unconventional and decisive leader led experienced well trained crews of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines to one of the greatest naval victories in history.
Sqn Ldr (Retd) Gwyn Williams, attended the event and stated “it was good to be back in the Mess after a 6 month absence to hear about the impressive battle and enjoy a traditional tot of rum!.’
