Timely Advice For Halton Personnel

The RAF’s Premier Presentation Survive the Drive was rolled out at RAF Halton this week. Group Captain Nick Huntley, Air Command, who champions road safety and is responsible for driving standards in the RAF, gave a welcome to the packed auditorium before short filmed situations were played and expanded on by members of the emergency services. He explained that Road Traffic Accidents are the biggest threat to RAF drivers, and his mission is to train staff to keep safe and prevent bad behaviour. He advised that even driving while using a hands-free phone could cost you a £200 fine.

A cross section of emergency services were there to speak of a call out to a road traffic collision that affected them.  Sarah, a Paramedic, Neil, a Firefighter, and Mr Johnson from the Road Safety Authority, gave presentations about their experiences and harrowing stories of the aftermath of dealing with victims, not just the ones with life-threatening injuries but the victims who don’t survive.

Group Captain Huntley said: “The MT Capability Office at Air Command champions Road Safety on my behalf across RAF.  They are passionate in their role, and their “Strive for Zero” campaign - which strives ultimately to ensure that Zero lives are lost, that there is zero cost to Air and that Ground Transport activity is undertaken with As Low as Reasonably Practicable levels of risk.  Each and every member of the RAF plays a critical role in this strategy and I hope that the messaging today will have prevented someone else from becoming a victim on our roads.  Anyone seeking further guidance on Road Safety or on the screening of Survive the Drive, I would encourage them to contact the Command Master Driver at the A4 MT Office at HQ Air”.
