CXX Squadron Honours Victims of Nimrod Crash

Personnel from CXX Squadron have attended a ceremony at RAF Lossiemouth commemorating the Nimrod Crash of 1995.

On 27th March, personnel from CXX Squadron joined families of the crew at a ceremony at RAF Lossiemouth commemorating the crash of Nimrod XV239 at the Toronto Airshow on 2nd September 1995.

The event, which was held at St Aidan’s Church in RAF Lossiemouth, saw the RAF Chaplain-in Chief rededicate a memorial window which has been installed in the church. The window was fitted by station carpenter Mr Conti and features imagery symbolic of Toronto, as the crew of the XV239 were participating in the Canadian International Air Show (CIAS) at the time of the crash.

In August 1995, the crew left RAF Kinloss and flew to Canada, where they were due to take part in two air shows. After displaying at the Shearwater International Air Show in Nova Scotia, the crew transited to Toronto Pearson International Airport for the CIAS, where the aircraft tragically crashed during the display with the loss of life of all on board.

A member of the Squadron in attendance said:

“CXX Squadron proudly remembers those who have gone before us and was honoured to welcome the families who were able to attend the service.”

During one of the readings at the ceremony, the Chaplain-in-Chief focused on the idea of what a hero is.

As the anniversary of VE Day approaches the Royal Air Force will be remembering the stories of various heroes throughout the forces and the civilian industries that served their country during such a turbulent time.
