RAF Lossiemouth mourns passing of Sgt Lang

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Sergeant Scott Lang, who sadly passed away on the 17th of January.

Sgt Scott ‘Stretch’ Lang was 42 when he sadly passed away on Saturday the 17th of January following a period of illness.

Joining the RAF in May 2003, he completed phase 1 and 2 training at RAF Halton before being assigned to RAF Kinloss in October of that same year.

He remained at Kinloss until September 2012, when he moved to RAF Lossiemouth, becoming an integral member of not only Logistics Support Squadron but ‘Team Lossie’ as a whole.

During his career he completed deployments in MPA (2005), Iraq, Basra (2008), Oman, Seeb (2011), MPA (2013), MPA (2017), MPA (2022), SHADER, Cyprus (2024).

His chain-of-command and close colleagues have taken the time to pay tribute to his memory:

Wing Commander Sharon Evelegh-Hall, Officer Commanding Engineering and Logistics Wing:

“Sgt Scott “Stretch” Lang was an integral member of his Flight, Squadron and the Engineering and Logistics Wing, who will be sorely missed. Having served a long and distinguished career in the Logistics Profession, demonstrating the utmost professionalism and positive attitude, his loss will be felt far beyond the bounds of RAF Lossiemouth.

Always one to volunteer to assist in the organisation of Squadron social events and a mentor to many personnel, his nurturing nature and huge personality made him a key component of the social fabric of our team. My thoughts, and those of everyone on the Wing, are with his wife Vicky, his children Gracie and Theo, his wider family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

Squadron Leader Jack Savage, Officer Commanding Logistics Support Squadron:

“His death leaves a big hole in the Squadron, in the lives of his many career-long friends serving here and indeed across the Royal Air Force, but most of all in his family- our thoughts are with them above all.”

Warrant Officer Neil Mackie, Warrant Officer Logistics Support Squadron:

“Stretch was not just an outstanding character; he was a beacon of professionalism, dedication, and kindness. Over his remarkable 22 years of Service, he exemplified what it means to be a true role model, inspiring and uplifting everyone he worked alongside…

His legacy of kindness, strength, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, Stretch. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”

Sergeant Dave Spence:

“I feel privileged to have called Stretch my best mate for so many years. He was the life and soul in any social situation, with a quick, sharp sense of humour that could cut you to the bone, but underneath it all, he had the biggest heart. No matter what was going on, I could always rely on him to be there for me through thick and thin... I’m forever grateful for the years of friendship, the laughs and inside jokes we shared, ones that could still make us cry with laughter years later. Memories I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. Love you brother.”

Acting Warrant Officer Sinead Russell, Warrant Officer Commanding Base Supply Flight (flight commander):

“Stretch was truly larger than life — not just in stature, but in personality and presence. As a colleague and a friend, he was firm but fair, the bad cop to my good cop, with a big heart behind the tough exterior and a loyalty you could always rely on. He embodied the spirit of LSS and poured himself into the people around him. His passion for bringing the Legends Bar back to life wasn’t just about a place to go — it was about creating a space where everyone felt welcome, included, and part of something. That was Stretch all over.

He’s left a massive hole in so many lives, but also a lifetime of memories, laughter, and stories that will never be forgotten. Rest easy, mate."

Sergeant Al Welsh:

“I’m utterly devasted that I have lost a dear friend of over 22 years. Stretch had a rare gift: whenever he walked into a room, it instantly felt brighter. People were naturally drawn to him with his warmth and the effortless way he made everyone feel welcome.

I will miss his infectious sense of humour and the daily chats that were meant to last only minutes but turned into long honest conversations where nothing was off limits – the kind of moments that I didn’t realise I would one day treasure so deeply.

He has enriched my life more than he ever knew, and I will be eternally grateful for the time we had together.”

Stretch leaves behind his wife Vicky, their children Gracie and Theo, and dog, Ruby. Born in Larkhall, he was a beloved son and brother.
