207 Squadron Wins Prestigious Dacre Trophy for Outstanding Performance

RAF Marham's 207 Squadron has been awarded the prestigious Dacre Trophy for 2025, recognising their exceptional achievements as the cornerstone of the Lightning Force and the centre of excellence for UK 5th Generation Combat Air.

Dacre Trophy

The trophy is an award presented by Air Officer Commanding No 1 Group to the best Squadron in 1 Group that year and is a memorial to the late Flying Officer Dacre DFC, who was killed in action over Germany in 1943.

During 2025, 207 Squadron demonstrated exceptional planning and efficiency in delivering pilot training whilst transforming their simulator syllabus to focus on wartime-style missions, instilling a fully operational mindset in graduating pilots. This outstanding instructional performance earned an unprecedented EXCELLENT assessment from the RAF Central Flying School.

The squadron's engineering team showed remarkable resilience in overcoming significant challenges, becoming the first UK F-35 unit to meet their annual flying profile whilst also routinely supporting front-line operations.

Their operational contribution extended well beyond the primary training role. During preparations for Operation HIGHMAST, 207 Squadron prepared all initial 18 Lightnings for embarkation on HMS PRINCE OF WALES, working through weekends to meet the ambitious deadline. Their engineering teams also deployed globally to recover stranded aircraft and return them to the carrier strike group. Most recently, 207 Squadron embarked a further 6 of their aircraft on the carrier to participate in Exercise Falcon Strike bringing the number of jets onboard to 24, the largest number of UK F-35B aircraft ever assembled on the aircraft carrier.

Throughout these demanding operations, the squadron maintained exceptional morale and team cohesion. They also supported the RAF's wider engagement mission, providing flypasts and displays for major events including VE Day, the King's Birthday Flypast and the Royal International Air Tattoo.

207 Squadron exemplifies outstanding delivery combined with exceptional teamwork and willingness to contribute beyond their core mission, making them highly deserving recipients of the 2025 Dacre Trophy.

Receiving the award, Wing Commander Ben Durham, Officer Commanding 207 Squadron said, “This award reflects the extraordinary dedication and professionalism of every member of 207 Squadron. Despite significant challenges with staffing and resources, our team has consistently delivered exceptional results through innovative thinking and unwavering commitment to service. I am extremely proud of how the squadron has embraced every challenge - from transforming our training to delivery on Operation HIGHMAST. This recognition belongs to every member of our outstanding team who have collectively gone above and beyond to serve the wider mission”
