RAF Marham became the latest Airbase to transition to Number 2 Group

On Friday 28th April RAF Marham became the latest Airbase to transition to Number 2 Group, becoming the lead station for the East Region comprising RAF Marham and RAF Honington, with Group Captain Fred Wigglesworth as Regional Commander. The Lightning Air Wing will remain Number 1 Group, delivering the training and operational output of the UK Lightning Force under the Command of Group Captain Phil Marr.

The newly titled Wittering model of Airbase and Air Wing provides a more equitable and manageable split of responsibilities between the Station Commander and Commander Lightning Air Wing. This reflects the greater demands on Duty Holders and Heads of Establishment, as well as the many challenges associated with the development of RAF Marham as it modernises and the Lightning Force continues to grow.

Group Captain Wigglesworth said “As we’ve been operating under the Airbase / Air Wing model for 7 months already, this final step in the transition feels like business as usual, but in reality it’s the first step on a new journey to develop RAF Marham and its people to form the Next Generation Airbase.”
