On Sunday 7th September, thirteen families from RAF St Mawgan braved the ever-changing Cornish skies to take part in Big F-T’s Rock Pool Adventures, an unforgettable day of exploration, connection and community spirit.
Hosted at Big F-T’s Shack on Tolcarne Beach, the event was part of a wider initiative led by the RAF St Mawgan People and Families Support Team, designed to strengthen bonds between service families, and their local area.
Despite the unpredictable weather, the shoreline buzzed with laughter and discovery as children and adults alike rolled up their sleeves to uncover the wonders of the rock pools. Guided by an enthusiastic instructor, participants learned to identify sea creatures, pick up crabs and even navigate coastal caves, many for the very first time.
Undeterred by the typical Cornish weather, it was great to see families from across the Station chatting and having fun together. The enthusiasm of the instructor encouraged the young adventurers, and their grown-ups, to pick up crabs, identify anemones and climb through caves. It was also exciting to see the growth of children and young people throughout the session from the encouragement of their peers, some of whom had only just met.

RAF Station Commander, Wing Commander Helen Simpson added,
We certainly had all four seasons in the space of the session, but the smiles and excitement from big and small really demonstrated how fantastic it was.
The event not only offered a hands-on marine experience but also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community and shared adventure, especially for families navigating the unique challenges of military life.
