RAF St Mawgan has marked a weekend of community spirit, inspiration and outstanding service, bringing together personnel, families and the wider Cornwall community in a series of events that highlight the Station’s positive impact beyond the wire.

On Sunday 28 June, the People and Family Support Team hosted a vibrant Whole Force Community Event, welcoming RAF personnel and their families for a free day of activities in the summer sunshine. With support from organisations including the RAF Benevolent Fund, the event offered something for all ages. Highlights included live music, face painting, a children’s first aid introduction, animal encounters with Mark’s Ark, garden games, bouncy castles and the ever-popular BFBS ice cream van. The event provided a valuable opportunity for families to connect, relax and strengthen the sense of community that underpins life at RAF St Mawgan.

Building on this spirit of engagement, the Station welcomed young visitors the following day for an intergenerational visit, made possible by funding from the Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club. Nine service family pupils from St Columb Minor School spent the morning exploring RAF life, making paper aeroplanes and touring the Station’s Sea King Gate Guardian. For many, it was a chance to better understand the roles their parents play. Frankie, aged 9, described the highlight of the visit as, “aeroplane making and seeing daddy,” while teacher Steph Begley noted the experience gave pupils a meaningful opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into what their parents do.

Alongside these community focused activities, RAF St Mawgan is also celebrating an individual achievement, as Warrant Officer Riddle has been nominated for the Cornwall Make A Difference 2026 Fundraiser Award. Demonstrating exceptional commitment to tackling food insecurity, Warrant Officer Riddle led a small team to complete two demanding three-day walks covering 140 miles dressed as food items and pushing a modified shopping trolley. The initiative has raised over £5,000 and delivered more than 700 kilograms of food to foodbanks across Cornwall. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Truro in September.
Together, these stories reflect RAF St Mawgan’s continued dedication to supporting its people, engaging with the next generation and making a meaningful difference in the local community.
