Rockets Reach New Heights at Chacewater School STEM Day

At the beginning of the Autumn Term, the skies above Chacewater School were filled with excitement, and the occasional rocket, as pupils took part in a thrilling Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Experience Day supported by RAF St Mawgan.

From Reception to Year 6, over 200 students across four sessions were immersed in hands-on STEM activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire future innovators. The highlight?  A high-flying rocket experiment that quite literally took learning to new heights.

Squadron Leader Leroy Hall led the charge, guiding students through the principles of aerodynamics and propulsion.  But the wind had its own lesson to teach; several rockets soared impressively skyward, with a few landing on the school roof, prompting a good-natured apology to the school caretaker!

This kind of engagement is vital, said Squadron Leader Hall. It’s not just about science, it’s about showing young minds what’s possible when you combine imagination with engineering.

The event ran all day and was part of RAF St Mawgan’s ongoing commitment to youth outreach and education.  With laughter, learning and a few airborne surprises, the day proved to be a resounding success.
