NEWQUAY, June 2025. The sounds of crashing waves and cheers of triumph filled the air on a sunny weekend in June, as over 30 RAF St Mawgan family members took to the water for a high-energy surf adventure, courtesy of Newquay Activity Centre.

Now in its eighth year, this RAF St Mawgan family favourite has become a cherished tradition, and this year proved more popular than ever. Originally set for 24 participants, the free surf session swelled to 32 due to overwhelming demand from the station’s vibrant community.
It’s what we’re all about, getting people outside, building confidence, and helping families connect through the outdoors in a safe and rewarding environment. Rob Barber, Director of Newquay Activity Centre.
Delivered at no cost as part of the centre’s long-standing partnership with the Armed Forces, the event welcomed new and seasoned military families alike, providing an energising introduction to the Cornish coastline and safe sea skills. It also offered a moment of joy and unity in the face of busy service life.

It is important as it brings families together in a healthy way outdoors on the beach. In an increasingly digital world this is really important. RAF St Mawgan’s Community Information Officer, Justin Churchill, capturing the spirit of the day,
The event is just one of many ways Newquay Activity Centre supports the Armed Forces community. As a Help for Heroes registered provider, the centre also runs adventurous training for service personnel, including surfing, paddleboarding, lifeguard training and survival skills – often collaborating directly with RAF St Mawgan.
