Awards At RAF Wittering Monday Morning Briefing

Professionalism and athletic prowess were recognised at Royal Air Force Wittering during the Cambridgeshire Station’s Monday Morning Briefing.

Senior Aircraftman John Busby received the Airman of the Month award. John works in RAF Wittering’s busy C4i section which runs the Station’s radios, telephones and IT networks. SAC Busby’s particular area is Microsoft SharePoint Online, where he has educated people of all ranks and provided continuous guidance to anyone in need.

Flying Officer Simon Miskelly is Officer Commanding C4i. He said: “Articulate and composed, Senior Aircraftsman Busby formulated a complete program of on the job training for his colleagues. Always willing to go above and beyond what is expected, he’s done well and we’re very proud of him.”

The Monday Morning Briefing brings together uniformed and civilian personnel for an update on the week ahead. It’s a routine feature of life at most Royal Air Force Stations and is sometimes used for awards. Yesterday’s awards were presented by Group Captain Tony Keeling, Station Commander at RAF Wittering.

Squadron Leader Mary Temple and Senior Aircraftman Chloe Finlay received awards for their achievements in the Lincolnshire Cross Country Running League. Sqn Ldr Temple was chairman of the league from 2010 to 2018. That the league is so successful and in such good shape is due almost entirely to her organisational skills and hard work over the last eight years.

For the second year, SAC Finlay is overall winner of the Lincolnshire Cross Country League and was undefeated over the seven-race season. Chloe trained so hard that, in addition to finishing the 5km ladies route, she then went on to finish the men’s course (twice the distance) routinely finishing in the top ten.

Fitness helps our personnel carry out physical tasks – like setting up a field kitchen or loading kit into a helicopter. It is also a great way to meet people, build team spirit and grow leadership skills.

SAC Finlay was also a co-organiser of the annual RAF Road Relays, which took place at Wittering on Wednesday 6th June. Wittering men’s team dominated the race, winning by a margin of 3 min 34 secs, but just missed out on the overall road relay record by 22 secs.

Sqn Ldr Temple said: “It’s very nice to be well thought of and have your work appreciated, but the Lincolnshire League is a team effort and we all work well together. SAC Finlay and the men’s team at Wittering deserve their awards. Staying fit is a part of military life, but not many people realise just how much drive and determination you need to succeed at running. It means hours and hours on your feet keeping that level of fitness up.”
