Royal Air Force Wittering Christmas Card Competition

A year six pupil from Wittering Primary School has won the Royal Air Force Wittering Christmas Card Competition.

Every year, pupils from Wittering Primary School design RAF Wittering’s official Christmas card. The card is sent to RAF men and women working across the world, local dignitaries, friends of the Station and even members of the Royal Family.

The theme for this year’s card was space, to celebrate the RAF being given the lead for this area of Defence.

Taylor Biles’ colourful and futuristic design features an astronaut floating in space, between the Earth and the moon, surrounded by floating presents, a shooting star and a Christmas tree. A little green alien even makes an appearance.

The school’s Friday morning assembly began in festive mood with some cheerful and enthusiastic singing from the pupils. Group Captain Jo Lincoln, Station Commander at RAF Wittering, then presented Taylor with a framed copy of his winning card. Group Captain Lincoln then announced that the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mr Mike Kapur, had generously arranged for Taylor and his family to have the opportunity to visit The National Space Centre in Leicester.

Rhys Thrower is the Headteacher at Wittering Primary School. He said: “The Christmas card competition is a great way of finishing the year off and this year’s designs were so festive and cheerful, the children did us proud.”

Group Captain Lincoln said: “Taylor has produced a wonderful card, clearly celebrating the space theme.  My husband Paul and I were immediately drawn to it and we absolutely loved it. The design is really imaginative and great fun, and you can see Taylor has put so much work and thought into the card.”

She concluded: “Wittering Primary School is such an important part of our Station community. Choosing the winning card was a real pleasure, but it was a hard choice because the pupils are all so creative. From everyone at RAF Wittering we’d like to wish Merry Christmas to all the staff, parents, carers and of course the children themselves.”
