Royal Air Force Wittering Christmas Card Competition

A year six pupil from Wittering Primary School has won the Royal Air Force Wittering Christmas Card Competition.

Every year pupils from Wittering Primary School design the Station’s official Christmas card. The card is sent to RAF men and women working across the world, friends of Royal Air Force Wittering and even members of the Royal Family.

The identity of the winning pupil is kept a closely guarded secret and was only announced at a special Achievers Assembly on Friday. There was an audible gasp from the other pupils as eleven-year-old Poppy Southall was announced as the winner.

Rhys Thrower is the Headteacher at Wittering Primary School. He said: “This year’s designs were so festive and combined the Christmas message and climate change really well, the children did us proud. I’m so glad I didn’t have to choose the winner. The School and the Station achieve so much during the year, the Christmas card competition is a great way of finishing the year off.”

Poppy Southall’s thoughtful design shows the Planet Earth siting in space, under a ‘Happy Christmas’ banner, with the message ‘Keep the planet cool this Christmas’ shown underneath.

Unsurprisingly Poppy loves arts and crafts. She is talented ballerina, gymnast and a competent swimmer. Poppy has recently transferred from the Girl Guides to the Scouts and is looking forward to her first Scout Jamboree.

Wing Commander Case said: “The theme for this year was Climate Change, and it was apparent that lots of our young people are passionate about the subject. Whilst there were many really fantastic designs, Poppy’s really stood out by encompassing the World in a snow globe with the message ‘Keep the planet cool the Christmas’. RAF Wittering is proud to use her design as our 2021 Christmas card.”
