Intelligence and Operations: The Team Monitoring NATO Airspace

While Typhoon fighter aircraft provide the visible element of NATO air policing, a highly skilled team of intelligence specialists and operations personnel work behind the scenes to ensure every mission is executed effectively.

From the operations room on Operation Biloxi, RAF personnel maintain a constant watch on the airspace surrounding NATO’s eastern flank. Using a range of surveillance data and intelligence feeds, they build a comprehensive picture of activity in the region and support aircrew with vital information.

“Operating on NATO’s eastern flank requires constant vigilance. Our intelligence and operations picture shifts hour by hour, and it’s our role to give the aircrew the situational awareness they need before they step to the jet. Being deployed on Operation Biloxi showcases how intelligence and ops come together to keep every sortie safe, informed and effective.”

Mission planners exploit intelligence to prepare aircrew before each flight. This ensures pilots have the most up-to-date situational awareness before taking to the skies.

“When we strap in, we rely on the Ops and Intelligence teams who’ve built the mission picture behind the scenes. Their preparation means we launch with confidence, fully aware of the environment we’re flying into. Operating from Romania highlights how seamlessly RAF personnel can deploy, integrate and deliver NATO air policing whenever called upon.”

During operations, controllers coordinate closely with NATO command structures and partner nations to maintain safe and effective airspace management. Their work ensures aircraft can be launched rapidly if required as part of NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert system.

The intelligence and operations teams are essential to the success of Operation Biloxi. By providing accurate, timely information, they enable RAF pilots to carry out their mission to defend NATO airspace with confidence and precision.
