The RAF Regiment has deployed its highly effective Rapid Sentry counter-drone system to Kuwait, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to regional security.
This defensive deployment aligns with the UK Government’s policy to protect British personnel, interests, and partners in the Middle East, while avoiding escalation into wider conflict.
The move follows an announcement by the Defence Secretary confirming the deployment of Rapid Sentry to support Kuwait’s air defence capabilities amid ongoing threats from Iran.
The Ministry of Defence has also confirmed plans to procure additional Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) to enhance UK force protection and support regional partners. This includes the provision of training in the UK where required.
RAF Regiment gunners have already demonstrated the effectiveness of the Lightweight Multirole Missile system. Manufactured by Thales UK in Belfast, LMM has proven to be a highly capable air defence solution in the Middle East.
The backbone of the RAF Regiment's Counter-Uncrewed Aerial Systems capability is ORCUS, which fuses multiple sensors such as radars and cameras with effectors including Rapid Sentry to detect, identify, track, and defeat hostile drones. ORCUS is the UK military's version of Falcon Shield, designed and developed by Leonardo in Basildon.
The RAF Regiment maintains a longstanding presence in Kuwait, with a distinguished record in airfield defence, force protection, and rapid deployment operations since the Gulf conflict of 1990.
34 Squadron RAF Regiment is currently deployed across the Middle East, with personnel operating in Iraq, Kuwait and Cyprus, contributing to regional security and the protection of UK forces and assets.
Beyond operational duties, RAF Regiment personnel continue to contribute to the UK’s enduring defence partnership with Kuwait, delivering training and strengthening ties with local forces, including the Kuwait National Guard.
“Our deployment to Kuwait is focused on delivering a credible and effective air defence capability at pace. Rapid Sentry provides a proven counter to emerging aerial threats, and my personnel are fully prepared to support our partners while protecting UK forces and interests in the region.”
Officer Commanding, 34 Squadron
