ABOUT Support Force

Support Force delivers vital high readiness deployable logistics, engineering and enabling capabilities needed to enable, sustain and recover operations and exercises around the world.

It is responsible for all the expeditionary engineering and logistics aspects of the RAF, the supporting reserve capabilities and RAF Music Services. The engineering and logistics elements of Support Force are also known as Air Combat Service Support Units (ACSSUs). ACSSUs provide the expertise and focus to support deployed air operations.

Group Captain Jon Smith MSc MA RAF

As a Junior Officer Jon was employed across a broad range of roles within RAF Logistics, including procurement, transport, fuels, supply and air movements. Amongst the highlights of his early career were his tours on Tactical Supply Wing and 1 Air Mobility Wing, with whom he conducted numerous operational tours in the Middle East.  

Since his promotion to Squadron Leader in 2013, he has spent most of his time in the joint environment, with staff tours including the Permanent Joint Headquarters, the Ministry of Defence, and Defence Supply Chain Operations & Movements. Similarly, his Squadron and Wing Command tours were in the Joint Helicopter Command with Tactical Supply Wing. He assumed command of the RAF Support Force in June 2025.

What we do

The Support Force provides a wide range of engineering and logistics capabilities that are essential to the set-up, establishment and operations of Airports of Embarkation / Disembarkation, Sea Ports of Disembarkation, and Deployed Operating Bases.
