On 1 September 2026, 1 Section from 4 Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) deployed to Ascension Island to conduct a 10-day patrol and visit across the island. The deployment provided an opportunity to develop understanding of the local environment, strengthen relationships with key partners, and contribute to the wider Ascension Island community.
During the patrol, the section conducted reconnaissance across 20 pre-identified locations throughout the island. The activity enhanced understanding of key terrain, routes and maritime access points, while providing valuable experience operating in an environment significantly different from both the UK and the Falkland Islands. The knowledge gained will support future planning and operational preparedness.
Alongside patrol activity, 2 PARA engaged with several local organisations and community leaders, including the Ascension Island Police, the Commander of the U.S. Space Force Ascension Auxiliary, and Sea and Land Rescue personnel. These engagements helped reinforce existing partnerships and improve mutual understanding across the island.
The deployment also featured several community engagement activities. Personnel visited Two Boats School, where they delivered a Paratrooper Fitness Challenge and an Ascension Island Rescue Mission exercise. The events encouraged teamwork, physical fitness, navigation skills and basic first aid among pupils, while providing an enjoyable and interactive learning experience with the aim of inspiring the next generation.
In support of local conservation efforts, the section assisted with maintenance work on Cronks Path on Green Mountain and aided to preserving the island's heritage by helping the Heritage Society clean several historic fortifications.
Members of 2 PARA also took part in several community events during their stay, including the annual Dew Pond Run. Demonstrating both determination and fitness, the section secured the top three places in the competition.
Another highlight was the range of recreational activities, including sea-fishing trips with local residents, during which the section successfully caught a 140lb Yellowfin Tuna.
Throughout the deployment, 2 PARA demonstrated the professionalism, adaptability and self-discipline expected of a Military personnel member. By combining operational activity with meaningful community engagement, the patrol strengthened relationships across Ascension Island and for BFSAI.
