Windsurfers ride waves in 25th Anniversary RAF Wave Sailing champs

Members of the Royal Air Force Windsurfing Association, including RAF Brize Norton personnel, took to the water recently to complete and develop their skills and enjoy the challenges of one of the RAF's most exhilarating sports.

Held on the Isle of Tiree on the West Coast of Scotland, famed for its windy and wavey conditions, the event brought together windsurfers from across the RAF of varying experience levels, from newcomers to wave sailing to seasoned sailors refining advanced techniques and those getting some valuable practice ahead of competing against the best in the world in the Profession Windsurfing Association World Cup event held on the island the week later.

Combining physical fitness, balance and tactical decision-making, windsurfing offers participants a unique opportunity to test themselves against the elements while enjoying the camaraderie and adventure that are central to RAF sport.

A windsurfer is launched high into the air, performing a jump or trick above a large, churning ocean wave. The windsurfer is captured mid-flight against a hazy, overcast gray sky, with the white sail and board angled upward.

Windsurfing brings together people of all ages and abilities and across the whole force to create a supportive community united by a passion for adventure on the water. From beginners taking their first steps on the board to experienced competitors, the sport offers opportunities for personal development, fitness and teamwork.

Group Captain Macartney, RAF Windsurfing Association said:

"In its 25th year the RAF Windsurfing Wave Championship again provided an excellent backdrop for demonstrating resilience, adaptability and determination and the unique sporting challenge that Windsurfing offers both on and off the water. Requiring quick decision-making, technical skill and physical endurance, the sport develops attributes that translate directly into professional and operational environments. My huge congratulations to this year’s podium”.
