The Royal Air Force Supports Launch of After Me, The Flood Exhibition at the International Bomber Command Centre

The International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) officially launched its latest exhibition, After Me, The Flood, during a reception held on 5 October 2026 in Lincoln.

The launch event welcomed 100 guests from across the defence and local communities. Royal Air Force personnel in attendance included Air Marshal Mark Flewin, Air and Space Commader,  highlighting the Service's continued commitment to remembrance and education.

The exhibition explores the impact of Operation Chastise, more commonly known as the Dambusters Raid, and the extensive reconstruction effort that followed the breaching of the Möhne Dam in Germany in May 1943. Bringing together a unique collection of photographs, film footage and historical documents, many of which are being displayed publicly for the first time, the exhibition offers a powerful insight into the human cost of war and the lasting importance of international reconciliation.

Guests were invited to view the exhibition and learn more about the stories behind the archived material, which documents both the devastation caused by the flooding and the remarkable 17-week rebuilding programme that followed. The exhibition forms part of an ongoing partnership between the communities of Scampton in Lincolnshire and Körbecke in Germany, reflecting a shared commitment to remembrance and reconciliation.

During the reception, attendees heard from representatives of the IBCC and visiting dignitaries who spoke about the importance of preserving history and ensuring future generations understand the impact of conflict on all those affected.

“In an increasingly divided world, After Me, The Flood reminds us that reconciliation is not about forgetting history. It is about understanding it honestly, acknowledging suffering wherever it occurred, and recognising our common humanity.”

"It was a privilege to visit the International Bomber Command Centre and attend the opening of the 'After Me, The Flood' exhibition. The exhibition provides a powerful reminder of the human stories that emerge from conflict, and of the importance of preserving these narratives for future generations. The visit also underlined the value of bringing together military, academic, cultural and community partners to reflect on our shared history and the lessons it offers us today – where the International Bomber Command Centre continues to play a vital role in both recognition and remembrance – while helping to strengthen the relationships that underpin our collective security and shared values”

Air Marshal Mark
CBE, Air and Space Commander

The exhibition includes previously unseen photographs, archive film footage, personal accounts and correspondence relating to the raid and its aftermath. By presenting the story from a German perspective alongside the more familiar narrative of Operation Chastise, it offers visitors a broader understanding of one of the Second World War's most recognised operations.
