Emergency projects for veterans were boosted by the RAF Wittering’s Golden Lions Cycling Club, who each rode 100 miles for the Royal Air Forces Association.
The Coronavirus pandemic is threatening the most vulnerable in the RAF community and the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) is making a maximum effort to support those in need. RAFA is the leading membership organisation and charity providing welfare support for Serving and Ex-Serving RAF personnel and their families.
A large cycling event, like the RAFA Ride 100 which has been held in previous years, is impossible under the current restrictions. However, activities involving no more than six people, where social distancing is maintained, are permitted. Squadron Leader Colin Green (47), an Engineering Officer, saw an opportunity to help RAFA.

Sqn Ldr Green said: “Maintaining social distancing before, during and after the event was the key. One rider stayed at home on his turbo-trainer, and then we divided the remaining riders into three small teams doing circular routes around their home locations so we could maintain distancing and reduce contact with others.”

Each of the circular routes had a ‘Race HQ’ so the riders could refuel and rehydrate at a single point, without having to use shops. One team cycled a series of routes around Newark, whilst the Wittering team used loops around their home Station.

The Golden Lions Cycling Club consists of RAF Wittering personnel past and present. It is open to commissioned officers and non-commissioned personnel from all three services, veterans and MoD civil servants.

The team set off at 0800 on Sunday 14th June in misty and damp conditions, which steadily improved as the day went on. The Newark team finished their hundred miles in good order but, sadly, the Wittering team encountered a few mechanical faults along the way. Happily, though, they were still able to complete the entire challenge.
Sqn Ldr Green said: “A 100-mile bike ride is no mean feat, and we couldn’t have done it without support from our teammates and, most importantly our families. Our supporters have helped us to raise over £1800, which with Gift Aid brings it so far to over £2000 – in less than 3 weeks, that’s a great total!”

Group Captain Jo Lincoln is the Station Commander at RAF Wittering. She said: “The effects of this pandemic are far-reaching, it’s not just about physical health.
