Electric bikes are being trialled at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby to make deliveries on station.

Project E-BIKES, as the name suggests, aims to provide a sustainable alternative to transport on stations using electric bicycles and cargo-carrying electric bicycles.

RAF stations are generally quite large locations, especially when they have active airfields.  The time taken to transit from one working location to another can negatively impact on productivity.  Often, routes across active airfields are not suitable for pedestrians so one of the only options available to our aviators is to use military transport.  As we move towards being Net Zero 2040, more sustainable options are required.

The use of electric bicycles and cargo-carrying electric bicycles is being trialled at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby, with the cargo e-bikes capable of carrying equipment such as tools, parcels, and clothing.  The trial is beginning shortly and hopes to prove the viability of an eco-friendly alternative to on-station transport requirements.
