THE UNIT

The Defence Warning and Reporting Flight falls under Combat and Readiness Force and is based at RAF Waddington.  They are a dedicated team responsible for operating the ORCUS, Counter Uncrewed Air System apparatus as part of Project Synergia.

The project is a combined Air Command and Defence Fin Mil Cap research and development activity, which is designed to evaluate new technology and support the generation of future equipment requirements.  The project is lead by Head Quarters Air Capability Strategy supported by the Future Capability Group, Defence Equipment & Support.

As part of the project the Defence Warning and Reporting Flight, when mobilised, provides the ORCUS Counter Uncrewed Air System capability in support of UK Military Aid to Civilian Authorities tasks.  Additionally, the Defence Warning and Reporting Flight operators are bolstered by trained personnel from 63 Squadron RAF Regiment to provide 24/7 deployment of the system.

The Defence Warning and Reporting Flight and the original ORCUS system can be traced back to Operation Olympic in 2012 and has been at the forefront of Defence Counter Uncrewed Air System development over the previous 9 years.
