The Observer Corps (later Royal Observer Corps) was formed to collect and report movement of hostile and friendly aircraft and rapidly developed an efficient network of monitoring posts. It comprised mainly civilian spare-time volunteers and operated in the UK until Dec 31 1995, when the Corps' civilian volunteers were stood down.
