In July 1952 Home Command decreed that WRAF Volunteer Reserve Pilots could be eligible for a RAF Pilot's badge, upon passing flying and ground tests at a Flying Training Command Station. Pilot Officer Jean Lennox Bird became the first woman to be awarded RAF Pilot's badge; after being a Pilot for 20 years, with 3,000 hours on 90 types, as well as being an instructor with a Senior Commercial Pilot's licence.
