The first city-centre to city-centre jet flights in history were completed by an RAF Harrier VTOL aircraft, recording the fastest time from London to New York (refuelled by a Victor tanker) aircraft of 6hr, 11min and 57.15sec. The race was sponsored by the Daily Mail, from the top of the Post Office Tower, London, to the top of the Empire State Building, Manhattan.
