About

The Pipes and Drums of Royal Air Force Central Scotland, formerly known as the RAF Leuchars Pipes and Drums prior to the station’s transition to Army, is one of the oldest Pipe bands within the RAF and is believed to of originated from 1947. 

The band perform at numerous engagements throughout the year both at home and abroad. Engagements include ceremonial parades, charity engagements, Highland Games and competitions, as well as the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland. Pipers and Drummers have appeared at venues around the world from countries as far afield as Russia, Africa, Europe and Australia. They also visited Australia and New Zealand with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. 

The RAF Central Scotland Pipes and Drums wear the “Royal Airforce Tartan” which was endorsed by the Airforce Board in 2003 and first worn at the 2004 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Key Dates

1947/8 Band formed, originally part of the RAF Edzell Pipe Band

2015 Renamed RAF Central Scotland Pipes and Drums when RAF Leuchars transitioned to Army.

Represented the RAF in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Ethiopia, Russia, Holland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia. 

Represented the RAF at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and the late Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday, Platinum Jubilee, and Her Majesties Funeral.

Participated in His Majesty the King’s Coronation in London and lead the Crown to St Gile’s Cathedral in Edinburgh for His Majesty the King’s Coronation Dedication.

The team

The band is led by a full time Voluntary Pipe Band Instructor (Pipe Major) and formed from mainly local civilian and former service personnel.

Rehearsals & Joining the band

The Pipes and Drums practice weekly at Leuchars Station, on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7-8pm and usually the last Sunday of the month between October and May. Although experienced Pipers and Drummers are always required, free tuition is available.

All stages of experience are welcome and a service background is welcome, though it is not necessary. Anyone interested in joining the Pipes and Drums must be over the age of 16.
