About

Founded in 1921, RAF Halton is one of the Force’s oldest voluntary pipe bands. Based in Buckinghamshire, the band comprises talented volunteers, including serving personnel, veterans, and civilians, united by a shared passion for music. Pipers and Drummers of all playing abilities are always welcome to come along. Expert tuition is always at hand for newcomers who wish to join us, and we welcome inquiries to book the band or a solo piper for events.

The RAF Halton Voluntary Band, based at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire, is a proud representative of the Royal Air Force's musical tradition. With a rich history dating back several decades, we are proud to have upheld our commitment to promoting the Force’s values through music over the years, performing at RAF gatherings, community engagements, and charitable occasions. Talented volunteers perform alongside serving personnel, veterans, and civilians – all of us united by a shared passion for music. 

Key Dates

1917 Halton first used as a military training base by the Army during World War I.


1919 RAF Halton established, marking the beginning of its association with the Royal Air Force.


1920s-1930’s Apprentice wings at RAF Halton form pipe bands to accompany their daily routines.


1961 Halton Pipe Band participates in the Lord Mayor’s Parade in London.


1966 Pipes and Drums of No.1 School of Technical Training perform at the Royal Tournament at Earl’s Court.


1977 First appearance of RAF Halton Pipes and Drums in Highland dress.


2003 The band performs internationally, including a concert in Bordeaux, France.


2004 RAF Pipes and Drums debut the Royal Air Force tartan at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.


2018 RAF Halton members join the RAF Massed Pipes and Drums for the RAF 100 Parade on the Mall and at Buckingham Palace.

The team

The RAF Halton Voluntary Band is made up of a talented group of musicians, including serving personnel, veterans, and civilian volunteers. Their shared passion for music creates a dynamic and harmonious ensemble that enhances every event they perform at.

Rehearsals & Joining the band

The band practises every Thursday evening at RAF Halton (near Wendover). New pipers and drummers are welcome and expert tuition is available. If you think you would be interested in joining, contact the Pipe Major. The opportunities available to pipers and drummers are unique to the RAF voluntary pipe bands.

Hiring the band

We are available to perform at a range of events; you can hire a solo piper, quartet or a larger band. Whether it’s a formal military occasion or a lively community gathering, we will tailor our performances to suit your event and budget.
