Soldiers from 47 Air Despatch Squadron, Royal Logistic Corps, have been presented with the prestigious Firmin Sword of Peace, recognising their outstanding contribution to humanitarian operations during Operation Underhill.
The award was presented at Royal Air Force Brize Norton by Vice Admiral Steve Moorhouse CBE during a formal parade attended by Service personnel, families and invited guests.
The Firmin Sword of Peace is awarded annually to the military unit judged to have made the most valuable contribution to humanitarian activity. For 47 Air Despatch Squadron, the award recognises the Squadron's role in the planning, preparation and delivery of humanitarian aid operations conducted as part of Operation Underhill.
The parade brought together Army personnel from 47 Air Despatch Squadron alongside colleagues from across Defence who contributed to the success of the operation, celebrating the professionalism, dedication and teamwork demonstrated throughout the mission. Approximately 80 Service personnel from the Squadron took part in the parade ceremony.
Speaking following the presentation, Major Sam Kennedy, Officer Commanding 47 Air Despatch Squadron, said:
“To receive the Firmin Sword of Peace is a tremendous honour for every member of 47 Air Despatch Squadron. This award reflects the dedication, professionalism and selfless commitment shown by our soldiers and our partners across Defence during Operation Underhill. Most importantly, it recognises the positive difference made to people facing humanitarian hardship. What makes this all the more special is that this is the second time the sub-unit has been awarded the Sword of Peace, having first received the honour for its contribution during the Ethiopian famine in 1985. I am immensely proud of everyone involved.”

The award highlights the critical role played by military logisticians and air despatch specialists in delivering aid under challenging operational conditions. Working alongside RAF partners and other Defence organisations, 47 Air Despatch Squadron helped enable the safe and effective delivery of lifesaving assistance where it was needed most.
The presentation parade was followed by a reception at Dakota Lines, RAF Brize Norton, providing an opportunity for personnel, families and guests to reflect on the achievements of those involved in the operation and celebrate their collective success.
