New technology is innovating the way Air Traffic Controllers are trained with simulators.

It is essential that our air traffic controllers are fully trained in all scenarios when they are controlling busy airspace.

Project HERA aims to enable controllers to maintain their essential qualifications at all times by using an aerodrome control simulator.

The simulator will mean that training can be undertaken whenever the need arises, ensuring our controllers are always trained to the highest standards and qualified to react to any situation. Often, this training is undertaken by working closely with aircrew who are also completing tasks or training near the airfield.  This can sometimes mean that the aircrew must plan additional approaches or airfield uses into their flight to enable the controllers to maintain their skills.

The use of a simulator will remove the need for aircraft to be flying during some elements of the controller’s training. As a result, the impact on the environment will be reduced and it will help us progress towards our Net Zero 2040 commitment.  The trial is expected to start later this year.
