Ukrainian Students Celebrate Successful Completion of RAF Elementary Flying Training Programme

The Royal Air Force proudly announces the latest cohort of Ukrainian students successfully graduating from the RAF Elementary Flying Training programme, marking a significant milestone in their aviation careers.

This important occasion was honoured by the presence of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, alongside Air Officer Commanding 22 Group, Air Vice Marshal Sharrocks.

The comprehensive flying training provided to the Ukrainian students encompasses elementary flying training, qualified instructor training, and qualified helicopter instructor training. These courses have been delivered through a collaborative effort between the RAF and NATO partners, reflecting a strong commitment to developing skilled aviators capable of meeting current and future challenges.

As of April 2026, numerous Ukrainian pilots have graduated from intensive Elementary Flying Training and Fast Jet Lead-in training under the tuition of RAF instructors. Additionally, several Qualified Flying Instructors and Qualified Helicopter Instructors have successfully completed Central Flying School instructor courses. A significant number of Ukrainian personnel, including pilots and support staff such as aircraft maintainers, have also received English language training to enhance operational effectiveness.

“The standard expected of the course is the standard…I feel very privileged to be in this position. It is having a real world order affect teaching these students and seeing what is going on in their country every day, it’s very admirable.”

These efforts form a vital part of the UK’s contribution to the Air Force Capability Coalition, co-led by the United States, Denmark, and the Netherlands, which is helping to build a Ukrainian Air Force equipped with modern fighter jets, the cornerstone of Ukraine’s defence.

The training journey began three years ago, with a strong emphasis on mastering both general and aircrew-specific English language skills. The programme provides the essential foundation of flying training within the RAF, preparing students to progress onto advanced fast jet training elsewhere. This initial phase focuses on developing critical hand-eye coordination, precise stick control, and instilling the core ethos of RAF aviators. It offers a valuable introduction to the demands of fast jet flying, following a tradition reminiscent of the rigorous training once used to prepare Harrier pilots.

"As aviators, we share the same fighting spirit which allows us to combat aggression and to protect all that we value. From our own history in the UK, we understand clearly perhaps more than most how powerful the few can be against the many. We’ve had our Battle of Britain and you are having yours at this moment, and we will help you to win that."

The UK, alongside NATO Allies, continues to provide support to Ukraine in response to Russia’s ongoing invasion. This support is focused on assisting Ukraine to defend its sovereignty, protect its population and contribute to long-term security and stability across the Euro-Atlantic area.

This graduation not only celebrates the achievements of the Ukrainian students but also reinforces the enduring partnership and solidarity between the Royal Air Force, NATO allies, and Ukraine.
